About the publication
Beyond the Model.
AI, machine learning, systems, incentives and their real-world consequences.
From the Editor

“The interesting questions are often around the model.”
Your AI policy may stop at your front door. This first edition follows the information, permissions and dependencies that continue beyond it, into the suppliers delivering your software and services.
Gary Marrs Editor, Beyond the Model
The system around the technology
A model is one part of a much larger system. Its impact depends on the data, people, tools, commercial incentives and institutions around it.
Beyond the Model examines those relationships for readers working in technology, security, procurement and governance. Each edition brings connected articles together around a question that matters in practice.
Edited by Gary Marrs
The first edition introduces Third-Party Shadow AI: the AI inside supplier workflows that customers may struggle to see, understand or govern. It follows that question through security boundaries, contracts, expertise, value and resilience.
Evidence and interpretation
References appear alongside the articles they support. Proposed frameworks and contractual ideas are identified as such. Research findings should be read with their scope and limitations, particularly when applying them to an individual supplier.
